The Aspara (Hunt: Showdown costume competition entry)

This is my entry for the Hunt: Showdown competition run by Marvelous Designer and Crytek.

The brief was to design a costume for a hunter, true to the period of the 19th to early 20th century. I was inspired by the costumes of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia.

I wanted to include pleating in the final design, and the "sampot sarabap" (worn as a skirt for female characters) seemed that it would be a good challenge. Using a true-to-life pattern in MD proved to be impossible to sim, so I created pieces that would give the right effect when put together.

The fabric textures for the sampot and bodice were made from scratch in Substance Designer, and the texturing was done is Substance Painter. The material shaders for the silk were made in Blender for rendering in Cycles.

The jewelry was sculpted in ZBrush and textured in Substance Painter. I used vertex colours as masks to vary the textures across otherwise identical meshes.

Final renders were done with Cycles, and the avatar I used is an as-yet-unfinished sculpt for another project.
